We spend as much as 65 percent of our time indoors. That is why it is so important that we also think about a healthy home. You may not always realize it, but harmful substances are often added to many products in your daily life. More and more people are allergic to all kinds of substances. Let's take a look a the bathroom. Most items that we use every day, such as towels, soap and shower foam, contain synthetic ingredients. Our skin is our largest organ - almost two square meters - and especially after showering, the pores of your skin are open and you are more susceptible to toxic substances.

For a green bathroom there are many eco-friendly alternatives that clean just as powerfully as chemical options, and contain no harmful substances. The soap ingredients are made plant-based and safe, completely biodegradable into CO2 and water. What also works well to clean your house on an environmentally friendly basis are the old-fashioned home garden and kitchen remedies such as natural vinegar, soda, green soap, methylated spirits and lemon juice. With a few drops of essential lavender or mint oil you give it an extra nice scent. In the past, this was even the only way to clean. Not so long ago, almost every household had an enamelled rack with three trays marked 'sand', 'soap' and 'soda'. You can still see them for sale in some vintage shops.

Especially with incense sticks it appears that the air quality can deteriorate considerably. A 2009 study found that some dust particles from indoor incense are as toxic as cigarette smoke, increasing the risk of developing lung cancer. Therefore choose natural reed diffusers and scented candles with 100% essential oil without phthalates, synthetic oils and fillers.
