from design to tranquil art
Marike Andeweg (1978) is known for her pure, functional approach to design. She studied Industrial Product Design in The Hague and began her career at furniture manufacturer Pastoe. Later, she founded her own label Not Only White, gaining international recognition and winning prestigious awards such as the iF Design Award, German Design Award, and the Red Dot Design Award. “After over 14 years of entrepreneurship, I felt the need for something different,” Marike shares. “I wanted to spend less time behind a computer and create more with my hands. Part of that came out of necessity, as I had been ill and found that my mind could no longer handle prolonged screen time. But it was also an opportunity to reconnect with what truly suits me. What I’m doing now feels like a weaving together of everything I’ve done before: product design and art don’t have to be separate – it can be both.”

how would you describe your work?
“My art is a combination of applied art and a search for visual serenity. As a child, I loved color and playfulness. Over time, my style became increasingly minimalist. I now understand that’s because of my sensitivity to stimuli – I seek calm. Serene objects and spaces literally bring me peace. But there always has to be a ‘pop of colour’ somewhere. That tension is what you’ll find in my work.”an ode to rhythm, simplicity and craftsmanship
“The Rhythm series is a tribute to rhythm, simplicity, and craftsmanship. It took two years before the first artwork truly took shape. The sheets of handmade cotton paper had been in my studio all that time. Their natural look was so pure that hardly anything needed to be added. Until one day I started folding. And then the paper began to find its own rhythm. The result is tranquil, layered work that constantly changes with the light. Each fold, each nuance reveals itself differently depending on where you stand. These are my most serene pieces. They bring me peace and feel like a tribute to my father, who used to build RC model airplanes with his hands. When I stood at the workbench myself, I thought: ‘Ah, this must be what it felt like for him.’ I still feel that connection. That’s something special.”
Rhythm Wood, Rhythm Texture & Rhythm Petite
After the paper edition, Marike continued experimenting with other natural materials such as wood veneer and texture paste. This led to new works: Rhythm Wood, Rhythm Texture, and Rhythm Petite. “For me, Rhythm in veneer brings back memories of the wooden wall panels in the house where I grew up. It feels warm and familiar. Creating it is almost a meditative experience, where time slows down and everything else fades away. Rhythm is the soul of movement. It’s the way shapes and lines come together in a flowing pattern. It gives structure to chaos and harmony to the unexpected. In my work, I discover rhythm layer by layer, in every line and fold.”
Rhythm Petite is an ode to the narrow or small wall, yet it also works beautifully on a large surface. It shows how a small format can be powerful in its simplicity. Its subtle strength lies in repetition, calm, and proportion. The way shape, material, and space interact makes these works a timeless and vibrant addition to any interior. “It’s an intuitive process. My work doesn’t come from a rigid plan, but from feeling and trust. Patience is essential. That cotton paper sat untouched in my studio for two years. Until suddenly I knew: now is the moment. Then something emerges – and that’s magical. It makes you want to come closer, to touch it.”

what inspires you?
“Inspiration usually takes me by surprise; I can’t force it. Peace and space are essential for me. A walk, a magazine, or being on the water with my family while sailing – that’s where ideas arise. Too many stimuli block that. I recharge in silence, and then ideas come naturally.”
what do you love most about your work?
“That I can trust the process. Knowing that it will come when it’s ready. That moment when you feel: now it’s right. It’s that journey of searching, letting go, and seeing something grow that brings me so much joy.”
connected by craftsmanship
The collaboration with By Mölle felt natural to Marike. “When I stepped into your space, it immediately felt like coming home. We share the same values: simplicity, a focus on craftsmanship, and a love for natural materials. By Mölle is not about speed, but about quality, calm, and authenticity. I recognise that same essence in my own work – and it’s exactly that feeling I want to convey. I hope these values reach more and more people who, like me, long for calm, simplicity, and authenticity in their lives and homes.”

what does your work evoke in others?
“The responses have been incredibly positive. Some people experience peace, others energy. During the opening of the new By Mölle studio in Dalfsen, many visitors came back just to say: ‘I just want to be here for a moment.’ That really touched me. Art doesn’t have to be intimidating. It can be accessible and evoke a sense of coming home. And it does – for that, I’m deeply grateful.”
“For me, the beauty of art lies in its silence; a story told without words.” - Marike Andeweg
