healthy bedroom checklist

boost your sleep

The quality of your sleep is affected by how your bedroom is decorated. Is it a place of rest and relaxation, with subtle colors on the walls? Is the room dark or do you see light, even in the middle of the night? What do you sleep on and under—synthetic or natural materials? And what is the air quality like?

The amount of chemicals and toxins in homes has increased over the past few decades, and studies show that indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air. This can lead to health problems, including sleep problems. Fortunately, there are ways to improve your sleep environment. We've put together a few tips for you.

create a calm & serene space

Decluttering calms the mind, which helps you sleep better. Is it chaotic and messy? Plan a day or a few days to organise everything. Have you not used something in over a year? Sell it, give it away or take it to the thrift store.

Electronics can have a negative effect on falling asleep. The blue light that electronics emit can be compared to the light that the brain receives from the sun during the day. This makes the brain think that it is daytime, which can make it harder to fall asleep. Therefore, it is better to remove all electronics that are not necessary from a bedroom.

use natural materials

Sleeping on pure, natural materials is unfortunately not yet a given. The majority of mattresses and bedding contain synthetic materials and chemicals. The RIVM advises to let synthetic mattresses, such as cold foam and memory foam mattresses, air outside for 72 hours. The harmful chemicals present, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and biocides, will then partially evaporate. You can smell the chemicals when you take a new mattress out of the packaging. If you inhale a lot of them, you can suffer from headaches, fatigue and irritation of the nose, throat and eyes.

If you want to avoid volatile organic compounds, synthetic latex, foam rubber and flame retardants in your bedroom, choose bedding and a mattress made from 100% natural materials such as sheep wool, linen, flax and organic cotton. Using natural and ecologically certified materials reduces the chemical load in your sleeping environment, which contributes to better air quality and overall health. Natural materials do not contain irritating pollutants that can cause allergic reactions. This creates a clean and healthy sleeping environment, ideal for everyone but especially for children and people with allergies or sensitive skin.e.

choose the right mattress

Your mattress is probably the most used item in your home and, according to sleep experts, determines 50% of the quality of your sleep. Choose a mattress that optimally supports your spine, so that you can sleep in a relaxed position. It is a myth that a firm mattress is always better; the firmness varies per supplier and is personal. Always test a mattress before you buy it and choose one on which your spine can relax properly.

Also pay attention to the ventilation: many memory foam and synthetic latex mattresses often have insufficient ventilation. Natural latex mattresses must consist of at least 85% natural latex for optimal comfort and support. The By Mölle eco mattress is made of pure natural materials with a certified quality mark, such as organic virgin wool, GOTS-certified cotton and 100% natural latex, without harmful chemicals or pesticides. These natural materials adapt to your body contours, reduce muscle pain and ensure a perfect fit for your sleeping needs. This provides optimal support and relief of pressure points for a deep, restful sleep.

pay attention to light and fresh air

A dark, quiet bedroom with fresh air is essential for a good night’s sleep. Make sure your room is dark by using thick curtains or blackout blinds. This helps your body produce melatonin, which deepens your sleep. Also make sure your bedroom is quiet, as noise can disrupt your sleep. Good ventilation is important; open a window or use a fan to keep the air fresh and prevent the room from getting too warm or humid. The ideal temperature is between 15 and 20 degrees. Whether or not you should leave a window open at night depends on personal preference. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and safe. In any case, open the window in the morning to ventilate the room well and let in fresh air.
