The sweet gold
Beekeeping dates back to ancient times in many cultures. Thousands of years ago, the ancient Indians used beeswax - the sweet gold - as an offering to their gods and to pay taxes. Remains of beeswax candles have been found in the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun (ca.1300 BC). To the Romans, beekeeping was a sign of wealth. They even held special honey markets. Beeswax candles were used for lighting but also as a measure of time: 6 candles were burned in 24 hours.

Candle making became a real craft in Europe in the Middle Ages. The first candle makers' guilds emerged in England in the 14th century. Many monasteries had a large apiary to harvest beeswax. Beekeepers passed flowering fields with their bee colonies and were away from home for weeks. They stayed with their bee colonies to take care of them, but also to guard them against theft. In the Middle Ages, only churches and wealthy families had beeswax candles because they were so precious.

By Mölle 100% pure beeswax candles Did you know this?
Paraffin wax is the main ingredient of most candles. This is a petrochemical by-product of the distillation of motor oil. Stearin is also often used in these candles to make them firmer. This is made from the fat of pigs and cows. That seems better, but its production is often at the expense of the tropical rainforest.

Beeswax is better
You see why we prefer to use candles from pure pure beeswax. A beautiful centuries-old craft to transform old honeycombs combs - left behind by bees - into the most sustainable candles on earth. Our beeswax candles are produced in a circular manner without residual waste and have an eco-cotton wick without borax. And the packaging: recycled cardboard.
