Linen, an ancient craft

Did you know that linen is one of the oldest cultivated plants in human history? Flax thread found in ancient caves show that linen has been spun by humans for thousands of years, and dyed flax fibers found have been dated to 30,000 years ago. Linen is a textile with an ancient, almost mythical history. In ancient times flax was a blessed plant, and linen fabric a sign of royalty, light and purity. Traditionally linen was also used as a medical material and it formed an integral part of the mummifying process. Over 5000 years ago the Egyptians called linen woven moonlight, because of the natural beauty and softness. Prized for its durability and versatility. It's non-allergenic and naturally antibacterial.

Linen is an heirloom in European cultures, passed down from generation to generation. It is the only plant textile fibre that originates from Europe. Linen is incredibly comfortable, completely natural and 100% biodegradable, made from the beautiful, blue-flowered flax plant Linum usitatissimum. From farming and harvesting, to weaving and finishing, linen fabric is one of the most environmentally friendly fibers in the world. Growing annually, flax is ready to harvest around one hundred days after planting. The pale blue flowers are visible for one day only, causing a flourish in May until June. Flax plants thrive in poor soil and on rainwater alone and because they don’t need pesticides, the environmental impact of linen is low and true carbon well. Everything from the flax plant is used; the seeds in bread and for linseed oil, the fibers for linen, ropes and paper.
